Chimpanzee Trekking: Kibira vs Kibale vs Nyungwe — Which Park Is Right for You? (2026)

The Three Great Chimp Forests of East Africa

East Africa is home to three of the finest chimpanzee trekking experiences on the planet — and almost no traveller visits all three. Kibira National Park in northwestern Burundi, Kibale Forest National Park in western Uganda, and Nyungwe Forest National Park in southwestern Rwanda each offer something different: a different price point, a different forest experience, and a completely different level of crowds.

This guide gives you the facts to choose — or to combine all three.

Kibira National Park, Burundi

The Undiscovered Forest

Kibira sits on the Congo-Nile Divide in northwestern Burundi, covering 400 km² of montane rainforest — the only montane forest in the entire country. The park rises above 1,100 m and borders Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest to the north, creating a continuous forest corridor of nearly 1,500 km² that few tourists have ever walked.

Until 1933, this forest was the private hunting reserve of Burundi’s kings. The local communities invested it with sacred power, and that reverence for the forest survives today in the form of exceptional biodiversity and near-zero poaching pressure.

What You Will See

  • Chimpanzees — eastern chimpanzees habituated to ranger presence
  • Black-and-white colobus monkeys — frequently seen in high canopy
  • 13 primate species in total including red colobus and blue monkeys
  • 200+ bird species — including great blue turaco, grey parrot, bar-tailed trogon, and the black-and-white-casqued hornbill
  • Forest elephants, bushbuck, and duiker (rarely seen, tracks common)

The Kibira is considered the most important site in Burundi for montane-forest bird conservation according to BirdLife International.

The East Africa Bridge Tours Advantage

East Africa Bridge Tours is the only operator that regularly runs guided chimp treks into Kibira from Bujumbura. The drive is approximately 2.5–3 hours north via the scenic highland road through Muramvya. East Africa Bridge Tours’s local ranger network means you enter via the Rwegura sector, which has the highest chimp encounter frequency.

Permit cost: ~USD 50–80 pp (subject to INECN confirmation) — a fraction of regional competitors.

Best for: Travellers who want an authentic, crowd-free encounter. Birders. Budget-conscious travellers. Those combining with a Bujumbura base.

Kibale Forest National Park, Uganda

Africa’s Primate Capital

Kibale is globally recognised as the park with the highest chimpanzee density in Africa. Located in Kabarole District, western Uganda, the park covers 321 km² and supports an estimated 1,500+ individual chimpanzees across at least 12 distinct communities — four of which are fully habituated for tourism.

The Kanyanchu Primate Walk has been running continuously since 1993 and delivers a sighting success rate of over 90%. Trekking groups depart from Kanyanchu Visitor Centre at 08:00, 11:00, and 14:00, with each group capped at 6 participants (minimum age: 16).

What You Will See

  • Habituated chimpanzees — virtually guaranteed encounter
  • 13 primate species including red colobus, grey-cheeked mangabey, L’Hoest’s monkey, and black-and-white colobus
  • 370 bird species — 23 Albertine Rift endemics including Nahan’s francolin and blue-headed bee-eater
  • Olive baboons and forest elephants
  • Optional Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (full day with semi-habituated group)

Logistics

Getting there: Kibale is 326 km from Kampala on a fully tarred road (approximately 6 hours). From Entebbe, add 45 minutes. Charter or scheduled flights to Kasese or Fort Portal cut the transfer to under 2 hours.

Permit cost: USD 250 pp (booked through Uganda Wildlife Authority)

Best for: Travellers who want the highest certainty of a sighting. First-time chimp trekkers. Those combining with Queen Elizabeth National Park (90 mins south) or Bwindi gorilla trek.

Nyungwe Forest National Park, Rwanda

A UNESCO World Heritage Rainforest

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in September 2023, Nyungwe covers 1,019 km² of southwestern Rwanda — the best-preserved montane rainforest in continental Africa. The park reaches a maximum altitude of 3,000 m and sits on the Congo-Nile watershed, with one of the Nile’s most southerly tributaries rising from within its boundaries.

Nyungwe hosts 13 primate species (representing 25% of Africa’s total primate species count), over 300 bird species including 30 Albertine Rift endemics, and more endemic species than any other surveyed Albertine Rift forest.

What You Will See

  • Chimpanzees — habituated communities, several tracking groups daily
  • Ruwenzori colobus in troops of up to 400 — one of the world’s largest primate gatherings
  • Angola colobus, L’Hoest’s monkeys, silver monkeys, golden monkeys
  • 300+ bird species including the rare Rwenzori turaco
  • The famous canopy walkway — a suspension bridge 50 m above the forest floor with extraordinary views

Logistics

Getting there: Nyungwe is approximately 225 km from Kigali (5 hours). The park is accessible from the Butare/Huye direction on the southern road.

Permit cost: USD 150 pp (2026 rate)

Best for: Travellers with time for a multi-day Rwanda circuit. Those who want to combine chimp trekking with the canopy walk. Birders targeting Albertine Rift endemics. Travellers combining with Volcanoes NP gorilla trekking (3 hours north).

Side-by-Side Verdict

If your priority is lowest cost → Kibira, Burundi

At USD 50–80, Kibira delivers a genuine wilderness chimp encounter for a fraction of the Kibale or Nyungwe permit price. Zero crowds. Genuine community connections. East Africa Bridge Tours is the only operator with established access.

If your priority is highest sighting certainty → Kibale, Uganda

The 90%+ sighting rate and daily habituated community walks make Kibale the safest bet for a first-time chimp trekker who needs to be sure.

If your priority is best overall forest experience → Nyungwe, Rwanda

A UNESCO World Heritage forest, the canopy walkway, Ruwenzori colobus troops of 400, and proximity to Volcanoes NP make Nyungwe the richest single park experience in East Africa.

The ultimate combination → All three with East Africa Bridge Tours

East Africa Bridge Tours is the only operator that can connect Kibira (Burundi), Nyungwe (Rwanda), and Kibale (Uganda) in a single itinerary. The route runs: Bujumbura → Kibira → Kigali → Nyungwe → Kampala/Entebbe → Kibale — a 12–14 day cross-border circuit that no other operator offers.

How to Book

All three parks require advance booking. Kibira permits must be arranged through an authorised guide — East Africa Bridge Tours handles all logistics from Bujumbura. Kibale and Nyungwe permits can be booked directly through Uganda Wildlife Authority and Rwanda Development Board respectively, or through East Africa Bridge Tours as part of a full itinerary.

What is the minimum age for chimpanzee trekking? Kibale: 16 years. Nyungwe: 15 years. Kibira: 12 years (guide discretion).

Do I need a visa for all three countries? Burundi, Rwanda, and Uganda each require separate visas.
