Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans) in northwest Rwanda is one of the most famous conservation areas in the world — home to the largest population of mountain gorillas on the planet, the research station of Dian Fossey (whose life was depicted in Gorillas in the Mist), and five dormant volcanoes draped in ancient Afromontane rainforest. Volcanoes NP is part of the Virunga Massif — a chain of eight volcanoes straddling Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo that together protect around 1,000 mountain gorillas, the entire global population of this critically endangered subspecies.
Gorilla Trekking
Gorilla trekking is the primary reason to visit, and it is — by almost universal consensus — the most impactful wildlife encounter available anywhere on Earth.
How it works:
- Report to Kinigi Park Headquarters by 07:00 on your trekking day
- Attend a 1-hour briefing with your ranger group (8 trekkers maximum per family)
- Drive to the designated family’s starting trailhead
- Trek into the forest accompanied by the head ranger and field trackers (duration: 1–6 hours)
- Spend exactly 1 hour with the gorilla family at a 7-metre minimum distance
- Return to the trailhead, receive your trekking certificate
Permit availability: Rwanda permits are managed by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and sell out months in advance in peak season. Golden Monkey Walk
Often overlooked in the rush to book gorilla permits, the Golden Monkey walk is Volcanoes NP’s second great wildlife experience. The Rwenzori golden monkey (Cercopithecus kandti) is an Albertine Rift endemic — a brilliantly coloured, hyperactive monkey that lives in bamboo forest on the lower volcano slopes.
The golden monkey permit is significantly cheaper (USD $100) and the walk itself is wonderful — the monkeys are fully habituated and extremely active, making for excellent photography.
Best combined itinerary: Trek gorillas on Day 1, golden monkeys on Day 2 morning, then onward to Lake Kivu or Kigali.
Dian Fossey Tomb Trek
Dian Fossey’s Karisoke Research Centre, where she lived and worked studying mountain gorillas from 1967 until her murder in 1985, sits at 3,000 metres on the Bisoke–Karisimbi saddle. A half-day guided hike reaches the camp ruins and Fossey’s grave — a moving experience set in the exact forest she fought to protect.

Mount Bisoke Hike: A day hike to the summit crater lake of Bisoke volcano (3,711m). One of the most rewarding day hikes in Rwanda with extraordinary views on clear days.
Birdwatching: The park’s Albertine Rift endemic birds include Rwenzori Turaco, Grauer’s Warbler, and many forest raptors. Specialist birding walks are available.
Cultural Village Visits: Several Intore dance and cultural programmes are offered at the park edges through local community partnerships.

Getting There
From Kigali: 115 km, approximately 2.5 hours by road. The Musanze highway is fully tarred and in excellent condition. East Africa Bridge Tours provides private 4WD transport from Kigali for all gorilla itineraries.

Best Time to Visit
Gorilla trekking is possible year-round. The most popular periods correspond to the dry seasons:
- June–September (peak season): Driest weather, best trail conditions, but maximum permit demand
- December–February (short dry season): Second-most popular, excellent conditions, slightly less crowded than June–September
- March–May: Long rains — trails are wet and muddy, but gorilla encounters are equally likely, and this period offers best rates and easiest permit availability
