One of the Most Scenic Drives in East Africa
The road from Bujumbura to Kigali is not just a transit route — it is one of the most visually extraordinary drives in the region. You leave the tropical heat of Bujumbura’s lakeside streets, climb through terraced hillsides and tea plantations, cross the Congo-Nile Divide, pass through the border town of Kayanza, and descend into the volcanic highlands of southern Rwanda before reaching Kigali’s modern skyline.
Total distance: approximately 310–350 km depending on route. Typical drive time: 3 to 4 hours (private vehicle, direct route via Kayanza–Gasenyi).

Route Overview
There are two main routes:
Route A — Northern Highland Road via Kayanza (Recommended)
BJM → Bujumbura outskirts → Muramvya → Kayanza → Gasenyi/Nemba border → Butare road → Kigali
This is the faster and more scenic route. The road winds north through the Burundian highlands, passing through Muramvya (gateway to Kibira NP), climbing to the highland plateau around Kayanza (altitude ~2,000 m), and crossing into Rwanda at the Gasenyi–Nemba border post.
Route B — Eastern Lowland Road via Ngozi and Butare
BJM → Ngozi → Kirundo → Kagitumba border → Rurindo → Kigali
This route crosses into Rwanda at the northeastern Kagitumba border (also known as Cyanika area) and is longer. It is used primarily by transport trucks. Not recommended for tourist travel unless combining with Ruvubu NP or remote northeastern Burundi.
Stage-by-Stage Breakdown (Route A)
Bujumbura → Muramvya (60 km, ~1 hour)
Leave Bujumbura on the RN1 national highway heading north. The road immediately climbs from the lake basin’s heat into cooler highland territory. You pass through Buhiga and Buganda before reaching Muramvya Province.
Muramvya sits at the base of the Kibira Forest massif. If you are passing through in the morning, the mist hanging over the Congo-Nile ridgeline to the west is spectacular.
Stop: Muramvya town centre for fuel and local tea (Teza Tea Plantation is visible from the road — some of the finest tea in Africa grown here).
Muramvya → Kayanza (60 km, ~1 hour)
The road continues climbing north through the Kibira highlands. This is the highest section of the drive — the road reaches approximately 1,900–2,100 m elevation through montane forest and tea estates. Temperature here can be 12–16°C even in dry season — bring a layer.
Stop option: Rwegura Sector of Kibira National Park. A brief detour (6 km off the main road) leads to the park entry point — the highest-altitude sector of Kibira, with spectacular forest views and, with a pre-arranged East Africa Bridge Tours guide, chimp trek access.
Kayanza town at the 120 km mark is the last major Burundian town before the border. Fuel up here.
Kayanza → Gasenyi/Nemba Border (25 km, ~30–40 min)
A short descent from the plateau brings you to the Gasenyi (Burundi) / Nemba (Rwanda) border crossing. This is the principal Burundi–Rwanda border point and the one used by most international travellers and tour operators.
Border procedures:
- Burundi exit: Present your passport and vehicle documents at the immigration booth. Burundian customs stamp your passport. No exit fee, but ensure your visa/entry stamp is in order.
- No-man’s land: Walk or drive approximately 200 m between the two booths.
- Rwanda entry: Present your passport. Rwanda offers visa on arrival for most nationalities at this crossing (USD 50 for 30 days; free for citizens of the EAC partner states, African Union member states, and most Commonwealth countries under Rwanda’s visa liberalisation policy).
- Vehicle import: If crossing in a private vehicle or rental, temporary vehicle import paperwork is completed at the Rwanda customs window. East Africa Bridge Tours handles this for all clients on its guided transfers.
Typical crossing time: 30–60 minutes for straightforward cases. Longer if there is a queue of trucks.
Border hours: The Gasenyi–Nemba crossing is open 06:00–18:00 daily. Plan to cross before 16:30 to allow buffer time.
Nemba (Rwanda) → Huye/Butare (80 km, ~1 hour)
Immediately across the border, the road quality improves noticeably — Rwanda has invested significantly in its national road network. The landscape opens into rolling green hills, banana groves, and sorghum fields.
You pass through Nyanza Province, historically the heartland of Rwanda’s pre-colonial kingdom. The town of Huye (Butare) is a natural lunch stop — Rwanda’s intellectual capital, home to the National University of Rwanda and the excellent National Museum of Rwanda, the most comprehensive ethnographic museum in the country.
Stop: National Museum of Rwanda, Huye — 1–2 hours. Recommended.
Alternative stop: If continuing directly to Kigali, Nyanza Royal Palace Museum (30 km north of Huye) is a 30-minute stop showing the rebuilt palace of Rwanda’s last mwami, with a permanent display of traditional regalia.
Huye → Kigali (130 km, ~1.5 hours)
The final leg climbs through Rwanda’s famous Thousand Hills landscape — cascading terraced hillsides, neat hedgerows, and immaculate roads. The RN1 is fully tarmac throughout.
Kigali’s skyline appears as a surprise as you round the final hill descent — a modern, clean city rising from a series of ridges and valleys. The city is typically entered via the Nyamata / Kicukiro Gate.

Road Quality
- Burundi section (Bujumbura → border): Mostly tarmac in good condition. Some potholes between Muramvya and Kayanza. 4WD is not required but more comfortable on the highland sections.
- Rwanda section (border → Kigali): Excellent tarmac, well-signed.
Fuel
Fuel is available in Bujumbura, Muramvya, Kayanza (on the Burundi side), and Huye and Kigali (on the Rwanda side). There is no guarantee of a fuel station at the border itself — top up before leaving Kayanza.

It is entirely possible to do this route on public buses/minibuses:
- Bujumbura → Kayanza: Minibus from Ngagara bus station, ~BIF 5,000 (USD 2.50), 2 hours
- Kayanza → Gasenyi border: Shared taxi or moto-taxi, ~BIF 3,000, 30 minutes
- Cross the border on foot
- Nemba → Huye: Shared minibus from border, ~RWF 3,000 (USD 2.50), 1.5 hours
- Huye → Kigali: Regular buses (Horizon Express, Volcano Express), ~RWF 4,000 (USD 3.50), 2 hours
Public transport total cost: USD 8–12 pp. Total time: 6–8 hours including waiting. Feasible for independent travellers.
FAQ
Is a visa required for both countries? Yes. Burundi issues a transit visa on arrival (USD 40, or equivalent in EUR) valid for 3 days, granted at all entry points including the Gasenyi border. Rwanda issues a visa on arrival at the Nemba border (USD 50 for most nationalities; free for many African Union passport holders and Commonwealth countries).
Can I rent a car in Bujumbura and drive to Kigali? Some car hire companies in Bujumbura do not permit cross-border travel in their vehicles. East Africa Bridge Tours’s vehicles are licensed for cross-border transit. Verify this before booking any independent car hire.
Is driving at night safe? We do not recommend driving the Burundian highland roads at night. Many vehicles have poor lights, road animals are unpredictable at dusk, and the highland sections have sharp bends. Aim to complete the crossing before 17:00.
