A Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter
Gorilla trekking is consistently rated as one of the world's greatest wildlife experiences. You'll hike through misty bamboo forests to spend one hour just meters from a habituated gorilla family — watching silverbacks, mothers with infants, and playful juveniles go about their day.
Where to Trek
- Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda) — the most popular option, just 2 hours from Kigali. 10 habituated gorilla groups. Permits cost $1,500/person. See our 3-Day Volcanoes Trek.
- Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (Uganda) — more remote and rugged, with lower permit costs ($800/person). Home to nearly half the world's mountain gorillas. See our 3-Day Bwindi from Kigali.
- Virunga National Park (DRC) — the most adventurous option, combinable with a Nyiragongo volcano hike
Rwanda vs. Uganda: Which to Choose?
Rwanda offers convenience and luxury lodges; Uganda offers adventure and lower costs. We operate in both and can help you decide. Read our detailed comparison: Complete Gorilla Trekking Guide or Rwanda vs Uganda comparison.
What We Handle
We book gorilla permits (often months in advance), arrange transport, accommodation, and an experienced English-speaking guide. All included in our gorilla trekking packages. Also see our broader primate safari options including chimpanzee and monkey trekking.
Best Time to Go
Gorilla trekking is available year-round. Dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer easier trail conditions, but the gorillas are present in all weather. Contact us for permit availability on your preferred dates.
